Cathles Falls on Bissell Brook

Simsbury, CT

A sprightly brook drains the wooded traprock ledges of West Mountain, splintering into glowing veins of whitewater as it careens over a mossy, 30-foot cliff and tumbles onwards through the forests of Simsbury.

Neither the stream nor this exuberant waterfall along the Cathles Trail possess official names, probably because the warmer months of summer find them vanishing as their watershed is sapped of moisture. Come springtime, however, the falls are reborn as rains and meltwater cascade from the ridge and meander northwards to join Bissell Brook.
